Continuous Interviewing
What is continuous interviewing?
Continuous interviewing is the practice of conducting customer interviews on a regular, ongoing basis—typically at least once per week—where the product team (product manager, designer, and engineer) talks directly with customers to learn about their goals, needs, and context. Rather than conducting large research projects periodically, teams integrate smaller interview activities into their weekly rhythm, making customer contact a consistent habit.
This practice serves as a keystone habit for continuous discovery. Once teams adopt continuous interviewing, they naturally start rapid prototyping and experimenting more often, and they do a better job of connecting what they learn from research to the product decisions they make.
What skills are involved in continuous interviewing?
Building a continuous interviewing practice involves developing several specific skills:
- Asking the right interview questions to get actionable insights, particularly focusing on specific stories about past behavior rather than speculative questions
- Active listening to truly hear what customers are saying
- Synthesizing insights from each interview, often using interview snapshots to make it easy to act on what you learn
- Automating the recruiting process to remove the biggest hurdle to continuous interviewing
Why is continuous interviewing considered a keystone habit?
A keystone habit is one that, once adopted, drives the adoption of other habits. Continuous interviewing has this effect—when teams develop a weekly habit of customer interviews, they don't just get the benefit of interviewing more often. The practice sets the tone for other continuous discovery best practices, making it much easier to follow habits like rapid prototyping and frequent experimentation.
