Continuous Mindset

What is a continuous mindset?

A continuous mindset means product teams embrace that discovery and delivery are never done—they are ongoing activities that happen continuously rather than as discrete projects. Teams with a continuous mindset engage with customers weekly, conducting small research activities in pursuit of their desired outcome, rather than doing big project-based research every few weeks or months.

How does a continuous mindset differ from a project mindset?

A project mindset approaches product work in distinct phases: do some discovery, build and deliver a feature, ship it, then move on to the next project. Each phase has a clear beginning and end.

In contrast, a continuous mindset treats both discovery and delivery as ongoing work that never stops. Teams embrace continuous iterations, maintaining a regular cadence of small activities rather than scheduling large research projects months in advance.

For example, a team with a project mindset might schedule 6-12 customer interviews three weeks out as a single research initiative. A team with a continuous mindset talks to customers every week as part of their regular rhythm.

How do teams maintain a continuous mindset?

The key is establishing and protecting cadence. Teams focus on limiting the maximum number of days between discovery activities like customer interviews, prototyping, or assumption testing.

If your current cycle time between customer interviews is monthly, work toward biweekly. If it's biweekly, aim for weekly. The goal isn't perfection—it's continuous improvement in maintaining regular contact with customers and frequent testing of ideas.
